An Introduction to Autism Training

Course Outline:

We will consider autism as a condition and how it impacts on the lives of individuals and how, in turn this can reflect on their learning. We will develop an understanding of how individuals with this condition may need to be supported in a school environment and the adaptations that can be made. Special reference will be made to sensory issues and the importance of working in a person centred way.

Course content:

• An in-depth overview of Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASDs)

• Transitioning between classrooms and teachers

• Peer relations, teasing and bullying

• Strategies and approaches that work

• Differentiation and how autism might affect learning

• An introduction to the problems of sensory impairments and what we might do to counteract their negative effects
