Topics to include :
- Providing an increased, evidence-based awareness of the practical, physiological and emotional journey that a bereaved person will experience
- Reviewing types of grief, including anticipatory, traumatic, distorted, complicated and the impact of different types of death
- Understanding the impact of supporting those experiencing complicated, traumatic or disenfranchised grief and identifying coping strategies to enhance resilience
- Sensitive communication: what to say and what not to say
- Increasing knowledge of faith and cultural considerations associated with death traditions, and understanding the importance of tolerance and sensitivity
- Improving staff morale through supportive conversations with colleagues and an increased emphasis on becoming a more grief-aware organisation
- Reviewing the importance of self-care, including an understanding of the impact of grief, traumatic situations, vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue
- Confidently signposting bereaved members of the team to additional sources of support should such needs be identified, including the NBS
- Recognising and understanding the impact of bereavement loss on adults, parents, family functioning and relationships.
- Recognising and understanding the impact of bereavement and loss on children, given their different stages of development and behaviours.
- Recognising and understanding the longer-term impact of bereavement and loss on children.
- The language used when discussing bereavement and loss with children and adults, as well as understanding their responses.
